My Little Sister

Two years ago I got a little sister through the Big Brothers Big Sister's program. We have become very close over the two years of our match together. However, since I am graduating this year our match will be over. I really have enjoyed getting to know this young girl and watched her grow over the years. She is a really athletic young girl and likes to talk about anything and everything. Today is our last meeting together. It will be a little bitter sweet but I know we both have bright futures.

Don't Blink

I have never really payed much attention to people when they talk about how time passes so quickly. Since the beginning of my freshman year all I could ever think about is how I wanted time to fly by so I could graduate and be out in the real world, on my own. Well, I am a senior now, and graduation is 29 days away and quite frankly I want everything to SLOW way down! The realization that I will be leaving my family, my home, and my friends has hit me pretty hard. They forget to tell you at a young age that you need to slow down and enjoy the little things in life, because one day your 8 years old and then you blink and your 18 and graduating high school.. Don't get me wrong I am super excited about my future and to experience new things in life, but I wish it wasn't all happening so quickly. However, the future is coming and I better be ready for it because if I have learned anything at all throughout my 18 years, it is that time goes by so quickly and I want to enjoy every bit of the next chapter of my life!

The Aftermath

I can gladly say that all the stitches are out of my leg and I can see a light at the end of the tunnel! After my infection and several other issues that came along with tripping and getting a rock stuck in my leg, I can finally say I am pretty sure all the junk is behind me! I can honestly say that I will no longer run in the dark, and I will avoid rocks at all cost. Now, the only thing I have to worry about is how big the scar will be. I am definitely going to have to whip out the mederma scar cream. I am very very happy that everything is looking good and hopefully I won't be back in the emergency room any time soon!

Next Stop... State

As you all know, the livestock judging team competed at the District contest, and just as expected.. we won! We had a clean sweep, winning cattle, sheep, swine, and oral reasons. Last year my cousin, Travis, won the contest individually and I took second high individual. Strangely enough, the same exact thing happened this year, he won first and I took second. Now we are next judging competition will be the State 4-H contest in College Station, Texas. We will be gearing up and getting ready for the contest with hopes of making it to a National Contest. I am really excited to see what the future holds for our team down the road!

The Final Countdown

This Friday is our 4-H district livestock judging contest! We have won district the past two years and have full intentions of winning the contest this year as well, and advancing to the state contest! This is my senior year and of course my last time to judge at district which is a little bitter sweet because my passion is livestock judging, but I plan to end my high school judging career with a bang! I am super excited to see what the future holds for my team! Our goal is to win the state contest and judge at the NAILE in Louisville, Kentucky. We have big dreams as a team and will stop at nothing to make those dreams come true!

Free Falling

I haven't been keeping up with my blog very well lately because I have missed so much school. For the most part I have been hot on the highway judging, but I had a little accident two weeks ago. As embarrassing as it is... I was running in the dark and tripped. I must say I really out did myself on my fall. I got a huge rock stuck in my leg and the cut was some kind of nasty. Needless to say I ended up in the ER getting all stitched up. However, my leg ended up getting infected and long story short I spent a couple days in the hospital because of it. To make things worse.. last Thursday I went to my doctor for an assessment on my wound, and we were all overjoyed with how good my leg looked and the doctor took the stitches out, well on my way home I felt something weird on my leg... I removed the band-aid to find my wound had RE-OPENED! So, I went back to the ER and got stitched up for the fourth time! I hope this time it heals up right and I wont't have to see another doctor or suture kit for a looong while!

Spring has Sprung

Spring is officially here! Along with spring comes the huge list of all the activities that I do. However, I can't complain too much because they are all things that I love doing! District tennis and livestock judging are both coming up soon, and my EIGHTEENTH BIRTHDAY! As you can tell I am quite thrilled that my birthday is so soon, I'm sure being 18 won't feel any different than any other birthday, but I will be a legal adult and that's very exciting! However, being a legal adult comes with a lot of different responsibilities that I don't exactly want.. Anyways, in the steer world my brother and sister are getting locked and loaded for the upcoming show season! One of my most favorite things to do is halter break new baby steers! Not only are they super cute and hairy, but also very dear to my heart. This year, since I am finished with my show career, my dad let me pick out a steer for my siblings. I picked an all white, hairy little booger and I must say I think I did an excellent job. Now, I may not be saying that in a couple months when it comes show time, but as of now I am very content with my decision. I guess I should get ready for the cycle of rinsing and blowing to keep his hair clean and super white! I will get to see the other side of showing, and get to experience what my dad has for ten years... trying to pick out the best steer as possible and hoping they turn out good. Although that doesn't always happen, but if the steer I picked out does end up doing well, you can bet that I will be boasting and bragging about it to my dad. Hopefully I will get to pick out many more in the future. As for college, I am still undecided.. surprising huh?

The Final Veridct

As you all know, I am now done with my stock show career :( My brother (Tyler), cousin (Travis), and myself took three steers to Houston and came home with none! We put all three steers in the sale! Placing 9th in the middle weight Limousin breed,  8th in the heavy weight Shorthorn breed, and 7th in the heavy weight Simmental breed. We branded all three steers, "Heater", "Turbo", and "Walker"! The good luck transferred over to the pig barn as well. My pig, "Phantom", got pulled but did not get placed, however that pig did have a fun time! While all the other pigs were driving around the ring perfectly mine decided to run around the ring as fast as he could, needless to say it was quite embarrassing, but I can't complain too much! The trip was fantastic! The family had a great time in Houston and I can definitely say I went out on a good note! My dad already has baby calves in the barn for next year, and I will be for sure out be out in the show barn helping every chance I get! I am very very excited to see what the future holds for my family in the show business and I will be there every step of the way helping! Showing cattle will always hold a special place in my heart and I can look back on my show career with nothing, but smiles and good memories! As one door closes, many more have opened. Judging season is kicking into high gear and all the spring contests are starting up! It's going to be a great judging season for the Hansford County Judging Team!

SPRING BREAK

Yes! Spring break is FINALLY here! A week away from school is exactly what I needed, and what makes it even better is that when I come back to school there will only be two months left until graduation! It's all flying by so quickly, which is a little bitter sweet, but all-in-all I am ready for a change! For spring break this year I will be going to Houston to show my animals. It seems as if ten years came and went with the blink of an eye! It's very hard to believe that this is my last ever stock show.. It's a sad time for me, but at the same time I am ready to experience the next chapter in my life. Now, what that will be I am not too sure, but you better believe that I am ready for it! Another thing that I am overjoyed about is the weather! Finally, the snow has melted and believe it or not, but I was able to wear shorts yesterday because it was such a beautiful day! Summer is my absolute favorite time of the year so, getting to soak up some of this warm weather is really quite exciting! As my show career comes to an end my judging and tennis activities are coming to a beginning! Between tennis and judging I am super busy, but I can't imagine my life any other way!

White Out!

So, at the beginning of this week there had been many different assumptions about what the weather would do. Well quite frankly, the weather went NUTS. We had a white out blizzard, with a foot and a half of snow.  On the bright side of things.. School got cancelled for TWO DAYS! It was amazing, awesome, fantastic, and wonderful!

One Last Hoo-Rah!

Well my stock show career is quickly winding down.. Houston will be my last and final stock show. It is my favorite major steer and pig show! Not only is the showing laid back, but also the shopping is excellent : ) I can't wait to be in Houston and finish my show career with my family and friends! I will be taking a steer and a pig and hopefully some good luck. Win or loose the memories and connections I have made over the years are irreplaceable and something I will forever cherish. As if my life isn't hectic enough, tennis is about to start up! My first tournament is Wednesday, and I haven't picked up a racket since last tennis season. So, hopefully all my tennis skills will quickly come back to me and I won't embarrass myself at the tournament. Well I will continue to be hot on the highway and busy as ever!

Vegas Baby!

February sixteenth is arriving way too soon this year, only because it is the day of my senior prom. I have been on the road so much this year that I haven't really had any time to prepare for prom.. I don't even have jewelry for my dress! However, I am still excited for the big night in "Vegas," and will have fun regardless if I am wearing jewelry or not! Quite frankly I should be more worried with the fact that it is winter and I am riding on a cart behind a miniature donkey.. Maybe I need to focus my energy on finding a nice warm coat. On the bright side of things I got a spray tan a couple of days ago and was very pleased with the results, so even if nothing goes right I will be bronzed and ready for prom! Well, I can't write in my blog without mentioning my latest stock show news. The day after prom I will be hitting the road and heading to San Antonio to show my steer, "Turbo." I am really excited about the trip because San Antonio is one of my most favorite places ever! Well between prom and stock shows I will be pretty busy in the upcoming days, but then again I am always busy..

It's All About the Brand

After a long week in Fort Worth, it is safe to say that it was a great success. My brother, Tyler (12), and my sister, Bailey (15), both placed their steers and made the sale, both receiving the ever so famous "F" brand! I couldn't be any happier with the results and the fact that we came home without any steers in the trailer. My sister placed fourth in the heavy weight Polled Hereford Division and Tyler placed ninth in class 11 of the Exotic Crosses. Although I wasn't as lucky in the pig barn.. it was still a great week in Fort Worth, Texas! Since I won the steer show in 2009 I was not able to compete in the steer show, but I was happy to support and cheer for my family members showing. I had an interview with the Star Telegram News Paper on Thursday the 7th, to say the least it was quite humorous. All in all it was a great trip to Fort Worth!

Stock Show is a Stedje family affair

Stock Show Feb. 7 03
FORT WORTH -- Most competitors in the Fort Worth Stock Show's junior steer show feel they need an exceptional bovine and a friendly judge to bring home the blue ribbons. But Julie Stedje knows that something else is needed to take home a championship."I have my lucky pole in the ring," said Stedje, a nurse from Gruver who is the mother of Callie Stedje, who showed the grand champion steer at the Stock Show in 2009. "When Callie won, I stood by that pole and ever since, that's where I'm at. I always stand by it when my kids are showing, and I cross my fingers."Because 17-year-old Callie is not the only Stedje that needs mom's help on the pole position. Showing steers and barrows is very much a family affair with the Stedjes. Callie's sister Bailey, 15, and brother Tyler, 12, also show livestock. And Saturday, Bailey's chances in the show ring were jeopardized by spectator who obviously didn't know where he was."There was a man standing beside [my lucky pole] and I said, 'I'm not trying to be rude or pushy, but I've got to get my fingers on that pole and cross 'em.'"The luck-blocking spectator politely yielded his spot and Bailey took a fourth place ribbon in her Hereford class. So the lucky pole came through to some extent, but now Julie is going to have to find a new support of good fortune when Callie shows, because Stock Show rules prevent her from showing a steer here again after earning a grand championship and selling the beast in the 2009 Sale of Champions for the staggering price of $140,000.This time around, she is showing a pig."I have been showing pigs for a long time, but I'm just as not as serious about it. I would rather show steers," said the Gruver High School senior, who will be showing a steer and a barrow at the upcoming San Antonio Stock Show. "A hog is more difficult. They do their own thing. So you just hope that they cooperate and don't squeal while you're in the ring."It is not surprising that Callie would love showing steers, given the financial windfall she earned at the 2009 Stock Show. But it is a little surprising to see how mature the then 13-year-old was about becoming instantly wealthy."I saved it all pretty much, so I could have it for college. I probably bought a few steers with it, but that's about it," said Callie, who was thrilled, and maybe changed somewhat, by her lucrative victory."It was really awesome, first of all. And I think it has made me a little bit more competitive in showing."And, apparently, having winning stock has helped Callie sharpen her judging eye. Her Hansford County 4H livestock judging team, which also included her 16-year-old cousin, Travis, recently won a national championship at the American Royal Stock Show in Kansas City."We started [showing] back in third grade with Callie because Brent, my husband, thought that she might need to develop a little more self confidence," said Julie, with a hearty laugh. "It's tough, but it's fun. And you think you are going to blink your eyes and it's all going to be over."Win or lose, no Stedje is going to have to worry about support."We always show together. We all have steers. I think we want each other to do good," Callie said, about the crew that might be called Team Stedje which, at the Stock Show, also includes cousin Kaitlyn, 13, and a couple of grandmothers."It is a complete family deal. We are surrounded by great people and family. The togetherness is what we love about it," said Julie Stedje. "I think [showing has] taught them a lot of life lessons. They've learned that they can be the best and then next year, they may not do anything at all. I think it's taught them to be thankful."But perhaps Tyler, who shows two steers named Superman and Lex Luthor, says it best."You just wake up and work with your steer all day," Tyler said. "And if you win, you have the pride of knowing you did it by yourself."

Hard Work & Big Rewards

So, as you all know last week was the county stock show and I am happy to say all my hard work payed off! From Wednesday to Saturday I was running on a total of eight hours of sleep... but it was definitely all worth when I won Grand Champion with my steer, "Turbo", and probably the sweetest part of it all my brother won Reserve Grand Champion with my other steer, "Heater"! I always feel so blessed to have so many people who support me and cheer me on in my county! They all make it worth while and they made my last county show so great.. I will never forget it!
The lack of sleep and non-stop preparation really payed its toll on my body! Monday morning I was at the doctor getting shots and antibiotics due to contracting the Flu and Strep throat. Quite frankly  between getting ready for the major stock shows and balancing school.. I do not have time to be sick! I have really been watching my diet and been focusing on eating healthy foods my body can benefit from so I can stay healthy and finish out my show career with a "Bang"!
My dad and I are leaving for Fort Worth on Monday and I am super pumped to say the least! I will be showing a pig in the market hog show, but my heart will be in the steer barn as I watch my younger siblings compete in Fort Worth Junior Market Steer Show! It is always such a great time to hang out with my stock show buddies, and watch the world's greatest steer show!

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

It's finally here... stock show season! It feels like it was just yesterday that I was attending the Hansford County Stock Show for the very first time with my crazy heifer, Rainbow... and then I blinked and ten years flew by! Now I am showing my last steer, Turbo. About three years into showing I decided to name my steers all card names so, when my senior year came along I could say, "I've played all the right cards." Well, looking back on all the success and great times I have had with showing I am quick to say that I have indeed "played all the right cards!" Since I am a senior in high school, January 26 will be the last time I show at the county stock show! I cannot believe my showing career is almost over. There is one thing that everyone reading my blog needs to know.. I absolutely love showing steers! It is a true passion of mine! Not only has it opened up the door of opportunity, but I have also made many life long friends throughout my showing career. It is inevitable that I will be sad when this chapter in my life is done, but I am looking forward to the new adventure in front of me!

Decisions, Decisions

As you all know, I am a senior in high school. It is an awesome feeling knowing that in May I will be done with high school FOREVER! However, the decisions that come along with being a senior aren't always pleasant. Right now I am trying to decide what college I should attend in the Fall. I have narrowed it down to two choices, Texas State and Connors State College. The pros about Texas State are that I would be able to pledge into a sorority and I would be able to have a fun college experience. Connors on the other hand is a whole other subject... I have been blessed with a scholarship to be a member of their livestock judging team. The door of opportunity is wide open for me at the moment. I just have to decide if I want to have a fun college experience, or if I want to be apart of a successful livestock judging team. Being on a judging team is pretty much a full-time job... between practicing and judging at different contests there isn't much personal time. It is time for me to buckle down and make a decision, too bad that isn't as easy as it sounds.

Life in the Fast Lane

There have not been many times in my life that my parents have successfully surprised me. However, two days ago they really mastered the art of surprise, when my mother had a brand new car waiting in the garage for me! Not to mention it had a huge bow on the hood that made it even better! A brand new car may not be much of a surprise to most people, but when you have driven a 2007 light green Ford Taurus your whole life a Land Rover LR2 HSE is really a huge step up. My new car has a functioning heater, windshield wipers, and the brakes that do not squeak. So, I am pretty much in heaven when I get behind the wheel of my new automobile. I have always been a tidy and neat person, but because my new car is all black with black leather seats I have taken my neat obsession up a couple notches. I am ate up with paranoia about getting a single scratch or a dent in my car. Most people say I am taking it way too far, but I think that I should take proper care of my car since my parents will not be buying me another one, possibly ever. I have decided that it is in my best interest to not drive my new vehicle to school. Basically because I can't get much learning done when my mind is wondering about my car and if anything bad has happened to it. Since I have made the decision to no longer drive myself to school, I ride with my younger sister who is now the owner of what used to be my car, The Taurus. I am experiencing what it has been like for my sister and brother when I take them to school each morning. Except my sister is driving and I am the passenger. She really does not like my snide remarks about her driving skills, but after all these years of hearing her comments on my driving I think it is only appropriate that I teach her a few driving tips. Quite frankly, they are needed considering she has not passed her driving test to receive her permit, not one, not two, but THREE TIMES. Maybe with my driving guidance she can finally get her permit and become somewhat of a legal driver. The fact that I received a new car has kind of been a reality check for me... I'm graduating high school in five months.
